He had a dream. And his dream was to make good chocolate that didn’t cost a lot of money. One of Mr. Hershey’s first businesses was the Lancaster Caramel Company. This business was founded in 1886 and was very successful. But when Mr. Hershey saw some German chocolate manufacturing machinery at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, he decided he wanted to make chocolate himself. In 1900, Mr. Hershey sold the Lancaster Caramel Company for $1 million. He used the money from this sale to build what is now the world’s largest chocolate manufacturing plant. The completion of the Hershey chocolate factory in 1905 meant the mass production of chocolate could begin. Many of Hershey’s major products date back to these early years. Hershey’s Kisses, for example, were first manufactured in 1907. The basic concept of the present day Hershey’s kisses wrapping machine dates back to a wrapper developed in August 1921. The familiar Hershey’s Kisses flag was added to the product at this time. Before these automated wrapping machines, Hershey’s Kisses were individually hand-wrapped. Today’s wrapping machines can wrap up to 1300 Hershey’s Kisses a minute. Hershey Chocolates USA can make up to 33 million Hershey’s Kisses per day, or more than 12 billion a year. The production of Hershey’s Kisses has been interrupted only once since 1907. The chocolate were not produced from 1942 to 1949 due to the rationing of silver foil during and after the World War II. And the Mr. Goodbar chocolate bar was introduced in 1925.
