1题:Government deregulation of the long-distance telephone business has resulted in increased competition among telephone carriers, thus resulting in lower prices for consumers. This process, however, will ultimately result in lower-quality service for consumers, because as the telephone carriers drop their prices to compete with one another for customers, they will be forced to cut corners on non-essential items like customer service. Which of the following, if true, casts the most doubt on the argument that government deregulation of the telephone business will result in lower-quality customer service
A、Technological advances have decreased the cost of providing long-distance telephone service to less than one-half of its cost prior to deregulation.
B、In a customer survey regarding the electric utility business, another industry that recently went through deregulation, surveyors found that customer dissatisfaction with service was 30 percent higher than prior to deregulation.
C、Customers have listed poor customer service as their number one reason for switching from one long-distance telephone service provider to another.
D、Some companies have decreased the cost of customer service by installing automated telephone response systems that eliminate the need for expensive live employees.
E、The greatest competition for long-distance telephone service providers will come not from traditional telephone companies, but from cellular telephone service providers.

2题:Read the argument and the instructions that follow it, and then make any notes that will help you plan your response. Write your response on a separate sheet of paper. If possible, type your essay on a word processor.
A、spokesman for a dairy company issued the following statement:
Many consumers buy organic milk because they are concerned about the consequences of the widespread use of recombinant bovine growth hormone and antibiotics in the conventional dairy industry. These concerns, however, are unfoundeD、While bovine growth hormone has been shown to produce significant developmental effects in cattle, no study has ever shown that its presence in commercial milk has had any developmental effects on human consumers. Regarding antibiotics, while it has been argued that large-scale, preemptive use of antibiotics in cattle feed can interfere with the animals’ immune systems and can lead to the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, neither of these effects affect the quality of the milk produced by cattle that are fed antibiotics. Therefore, there is no reasonable justification for a consumer to pay $5 for a gallon of organic milk when a perfectly good gallon of conventional milk can be had for half the price.
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion, be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative examples or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.

3题:The following questions present a sentence, part of which or all of which is underlineD、Beneath the sentence, you will find five ways of phrasing the underlined part. The first of these repeats the original; the other four are different. If you think the original is best, choose the first answer; otherwise choose one of the others.
These questions test correctness and effectiveness of expression. In choosing your answer, follow the requirements of standard writtenEnglish; that is, pay attention to grammar, choice of words, and sentence construction.Choose the answer that produces the most effective sentence; this answer should be clear and exact, without awkwardness, ambiguity, redundancy, or grammatical error.

5题:The questions in this group are based on the content of a passage. After reading the passage, choose the best answer to each question,Answer all questions following the passage on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage.
Forget hostile aliens.According to a forthcoming book by noted astrophysicistEgbert Larson, the intrepid humans who first attempt interstellar space travel will face far more daunting challenges before they ever meet the Little Green Men.
Larson begins with the problem of relativistic time dilation. If you travel all the way toAlphaCentauri, you’d like to come back and tell your friends about it, right It’s not too likely to happen, though. If Mr.Einstein was right about relativity--and we’re not going to say he wasn’t--then time slows down when you approach the speed of light.A、person traveling at any velocity near the speed of light will age only days for every week, month, or even year that passes on earth. Relativity does not present a problem for interstellar space travel, per se, but it does mean that interstellar civilizations or even just interstellar communications will require a mind-boggling amount of calendar juggling.
Did we mention that you’d have to travel at near the speed of light That’s because the distance between stars is so vast that even if you could travel at the speed of light--which, Larson reminds us, you can’t--it would take more than four years to reach our closest star neighbors,Alpha Proxima andAlphaCentauri, and decades or centuries to reach the other stars in our "immediate neighborhooD、"And if you tried to accelerate directly to the speed of light like they do in the movies, you’d be instantly splattered on the back of your theoretical spacecraft.Achieving anything close to light speed will require sustained accelera- tion at a level that human bodies can withstand--say, a crushing two gravities--for over a year.Better hope somebody brings some chips.
Speaking of chips, food is going to be a problem. Since it is economically, if not physically, impossible to accelerate 200 years’ worth of food to nearly the speed of light, and since you’re not likely to find any grocery stores along the way, someone will have to figure out how to make food in space. Keeping a crew alive on the way turns out to be the trickiest part of all. Once you’ve got the nearly impossible physics of space travel worked out, you still have to figure out the chemistry and biology of keeping your air and water clean and keeping your crew fed and safe from radiation and infection, and--did we mention the 200 years --you’ll probably need several generations of crew members to complete the trip.Ever been on a bus for more than 24 hours It’s not a pretty picture.
We applaud Larson for his insightful writing and his scrupulous attention to scientific detail. For those of you seeking a cold, hard look at the reality of interstellar space travel, this is a stellar reaD、But be warned: Larson doesn’t let you down gently. For those of you sincerely hoping to beam up with Scotty--and you know who you are--you might want to give this one a pass.
Which of the following would make the most appropriate title for this passage
A、GoingBoldly Where No One Has GoneBefore: The Promise and Peril of Interstellar Space Travel
B、TheDay theEarth Stood Still: Why Interstellar Space Travel IsEssential to Human Survival
C、The Wrath of Larson:Egbert Larson’s Quest toBuild an Interstellar Spacecraft
D、Busted Flat inBeta Regulus: TheCrushingChallenges of Interstellar Space Travel
