Modern scientists divide theprocess of dying into two phases -- clinical or temporary death and biologicaldeath.Clinical death occurs when the vital organssuchas the heart or lungs.have cease to functionbut havenot suffered permanent damage. The organism can still be revived (复活).Biological death Occurs when changes in the organism lead to the breaking up of vital cells andtissues.Death is then unchangeable and final.

Scientists have been seeking away to prolong the period of clinical death so that the organism can remainalive before biological death occurs. The best method developed so far involvescooling of the organismcombined with narcotic (麻醉的) sleep.By slowing down the bodysmetabolism (新陈代谢)coolingdelays the processes leading to biological death.

To illustrate how this worksscientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkeycalled Keta. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcotic. Then theysurrounded her body with ice bags and began checking her body temperature.Whenit had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began draining blood from an artery(动脉).The monkeys bloodpressure decreased and an hour later both the heart and respiration stoppedclinical death set in.For twenty minutes Keta remained in thisstate. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees. At this point the scientists pumpedblood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artificialrespiration. After two minutes Ketas heart becomeactive once more. After fifteen minutesspontaneous(自然产生的) respiration began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes andlifted her head. After six hourswhen the scientiststried to give her a penicillin injectionKeta seizedthe syringe (注射器) and ran with it around the room.Herbehavior differed little from that of a healthy animal.

New foods and the New World
In the last 500 years, nothing about people-not their clothes, ideas, or languages – has changed as much as what they eat. The original chocolate was made from the seeds of the cocoa tree(可可树) by South American Indians. The Spanish Introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500’s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became fashionable. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exit today.
The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved when the crop failed during the “potato Famine(饥荒)” of 1845-1846, and thousands more were forced to leave their homeland and move to America.
There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the world’s largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in colombia and other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia, a country is Africa. It was first made into a drink by Aragbs during the 1400’s.
According to an Arabic legend, coffee was discovered when a person named kaldi noticed that his goats were attracted to the red berries on a coffee bush. He tried one and experienced the “wide- awake” feeling that one-third of the world’s population now starts the day with.
