第3、4、5、6、7题: 第二篇 Too Late to Regret it When I was a junior, I met a second-year student in my department. He wasn't tall or good-looking, but he was very nice, attractive and athletic. He had something that I admired very much. He was natural, warm, and sincere. I disregarded (不顾) my parents' disapproval. We were very happy together. He picked me up from my dorm every morning, and after class we would sit alongside the stream that ran through campus, or sunbathe (晒太阳) on the lawn. At night he would walk me back to my dorm. He came from a poor family, but in order to make me happy, he borrowed money from his friend to buy presents and meals for me. Our fellow students looked up to him as a role model, and the girls envied (妒忌) me. He wasn't a local, but wanted to stay here after graduation. I thought we had a future together. However, when I got a part-time job during the summer vacation, people began giving me a lot of pressure, saying that a pretty, intelligent girl like me should find a better guy to spend time with. This was also what my family thought. He spent the summer in his hometown, so I was all by myself. When he got back, I began finding fault with him. But his big heart and warmth soon drove all unpleasant thoughts away. However, I had no idea how badly I had hurt him and that things would get worse. I had a good part4ime job off campus that paid pretty well. With my good performance at school, I also got admission to graduate school at one of China's best universities. He, on the other hand, did not do so well at school or at work. I had to worry about his living expenses, job and scores. Almost all my colleagues and friends advised me to break up with him. Then we had a quarrel last June. He was in great pain, and my cold words and bad moods started turning him away. Graduation time was drawing near, and he said he wanted to go back to his hometown. He said that he couldn't put up with me anymore. I was shocked and looked at him in despair. True love happens only once, but I found it out too late. 36 When did the author fall in love with the boy? A When she was a junior. B After she had a quarrel with him. C When she was a second-year student. D After she found a part-time job. 37 What did he do to make her happy? A He studied much harder. B He often took her for a ride. C He often bought her presents and meals. D He always endured her insults. 38 Who advised her to break up with him? A His parents. B Her teachers. C Their fellow students. D Her colleagues and friends. 39 Why did he leave her? A Because he hated her. B Because he could no longer bear her. C Because his parents needed taking care of D Because he wasn't a local. 40 Upon learning that he would leave her, she was A very happy. B extremely joyful. C in great pain. D quite relieved. |

第16、17、18、19、20、21、22、23题: Even Intelligent People Can Fail 1 The striking thing about the innovators whosucceeded in making our modern world is how often they failed. Turn on a light, take a photograph, watch TV, search the Web, jet across the Pacific Ocean, talkon a cell-phone (手机). The innovators who left us thesethings had to find the way to success through a maze (错综复杂) of wrong turns. 2 We have just celebrated the 125th anniversaryof American innovator Thomas Edison's success in heating a thin line towhite-hot heat for 14 hours in his lab in New Jersey, US. He did that onOctober 22, 1879, and followed up a month later by keeping a thread of commoncardboard alight (点亮着的) in an airless space for 45hours. Three years later he went on to light up half a square mile of downtownManhattan, even though only one of the six power plants in his design workedwhen he turned it on, on September 4, 1882. 3 "Many of life's failures," thesupreme innovator said, "are people who did not realize how close theywere to success when they gave up." Before that magical moment in October1879, Edison had worked out no fewer than 3,000 theories about electric light, but in only two cases did his experiments work. 4 No one likes failure, but the smartinnovators learn from it. Mark Gumz, the head of the camera maker OlympusAmerica Inc, attributes some of the company's successes in technology tounderstanding failure. His popular phrase is: "You only fail when youquit." 5 Over two centuries, the most common qualityof the innovators has been persistence. That is another way of saying they hadthe emotional ability to keep up what they were doing. Walt Disney, the founderof Disneyland, was so broke after a succession of financial failures that hewas left shoeless in his office because he could not afford the US$1.50 to gethis shoes from the repair shop. Pioneering car maker Henry Ford failed with onecompany and was forced out of another before he developed the Model T car. 6 Failure is harder to bear in today's open, accelerated world. Hardly any innovation works the first time. But an impatientsociety and the media want instant success. When American music and moviemaster David Geffen had a difficult time, a critic said nastily that the onlydifference between Geffen Records (Geffen's company) and the Titanic (the ship that went down) was that the Titanic had better music. Actually, it wasn't. Afterfour years of losses, Geffen had so many hits (成功的作品) he could afford a ship as big as the Titanic all to himself. 1 Paragraph 2__________. 2 Paragraph 3__________. 3 Paragraph 4__________. 4 Paragraph 5__________. A Importance of learning from failure B Quality shared by most innovators C Edison's innovation D Edison's comment on failure E Contributions made by innovators F Miseries endured by innovators 5 People often didn't realize how close theywere to success when__________. 6 Before Henry Ford eventually developed theModel T car,__________. 7 Walt Disney was once so poor that__________. 8 The media demand that__________. A he developed 3,000 theories B he couldn't afford to buy a pair of shoes C he found himself an unsuccessful man D they quitted E an innovation should work immediately F failure is the mother of success |

第24、25、26、27、28题: 第三篇 How to Be a Successful Businessperson Have you ever wondered why some people are successful in business and others are not? Here's a story about one successful businessperson. He started out washing dishes and today he owns 168 restaurants. Zubair Kazi was born in Bhatkal, a small town in southwest India. His dream was to be an airplane pilot, and when he was 16 years old, he learned to fly a small plane. At the age of 23 and with just a little money in his pocket, Mr. Kazi moved to the United States. He hoped to get a job in the airplane industry in California. Instead, he ended up working for a company that rented cars. While Mr. Kazi was working at the car rental (祖赁的) company, he frequently ate at a nearby KFC restaurant. To save money on food, he decided to get a job with KFC. For two months, he worked as a cook's assistant. His job was to clean the kitchen and help the cook. "I didn't like it," Mr. Kazi says, "but I always did the best I could." One day, Mr. Kazi's two co-workers failed to come to work. That day, Mr. Kazi did the work of all three people in the kitchen. This really impressed the owners of the restaurant. A few months later, the owners needed a manager for a new restaurant. They gave the job to Mr. Kazi. He worked hard as the manager and soon the restaurant was making a profit. A few years later, Mr. Kazi heard about a restaurant that was losing money. The restaurant was dirty inside and the food was terrible. Mr. Kazi borrowed money from a bank and bought the restaurant. For the first six months, Mr. Kazi worked in the restaurant from 8 a.m. t0 10 p.m., seven days a week. He and his wife cleaned up the restaurant, remodeled the front of the building, and improved the cooking. They also tried hard to please the customers. lf someone had to wait more than ten minutes for their food, Mrs. Kazi gave them a free soda. Before long the restaurant was making a profit. A year later, Mr. Kazi sold his restaurant for a profit. With the money he earned, he bought three more restaurants that were losing money. Again,'he cleaned them up, improved the food, and retrained the employees. Before long these restaurants were making a profit, too. Today Mr. Kazi owns 168 restaurants, but he isn't planning to stop there. He's looking for more poorly managed restaurants to buy. "I love it when I go to buy a restaurant and find it's a mess," Mr. Kazi says. "The only way it can go is up." 41 When Mr. Kazi was young, his dream was to A sellcars. B own a restaurant. C be an airplane pilot. D become a good cook. 42 Mr. Kazi decided to work with KFC to A learn how to cook. B save money for a car. C save money on food.
