Look After Your Voice

Often speakers at a meeting experience drymouths and ask for a glass of water. You can solve the problem by activatingthe saliva in your mouth. First gently bite the edges of your tongue with yourteeth. Or, press your entire tongue to the bottom of your mouth and hold itthere until the saliva flow. Or you can imagine that you are slicing a bigjuicy lemon and sucking the juice.

Before you begin your talk, be kind to yourvoice, Avoid milk or creamy drinks which coat your throat. Keen your throat wetby drinking a little sweetened warm tea or diluted fruit juice.

If you sense that you are losing your voice, stop talking completely. Save your voice for your speech. You may feel foolishusing paper to write notes, but the best thing you can do is to rest yourvoice. If you need to see a doctor, perhaps you can get some advice from aprofessional singer. In the meantime, do not even talk in a low voice.

What about drinking alcohol to wet your throat?I advise you not to touch alcohol before speaking. The problem with alcohol isthat one drink gives you a little confidence. The second drink gives you evenmore confidence. Finally you will feel all-powerful and you will feel you can doeverything, but in fact your brain and your mouth do not work togetherproperly. Save the alcohol until after you finish speaking.

Perhaps you want to accept the advice, but youmay wonder if you can ever change the habits of a lifetime. Of course you can.Goethe, who lived before indoor skating rinks or swimming pools, said, "Welearn to skate in the summer and swim in the winter". Take this message toheart and give yourself time to develop your new habits. If you are willing tochange, you will soon be able to say that you will never forget thesetechniques because they became a part of your body.

9、10、11、12、13、14、15、16题:
How technology pushes down price
1 Prices have fallen in the food business because of advances in food production and distribution technology. Consumers have benefited greatly from those advances. People who predicted that the world would run out of food were wrong. We are producing more and more food with less and less capital. Food is therefore more plentiful and cheaper than it has ever been. Spending on food compared with other goods has fallen for many years, and continues to drop.
2 Supermarkets have helped push down prices mainly because of their scale. Like any big business, they can invest in IT systems that make them efficient. And their size allows them to buy in bulk. As supermarkets get bigger, the prices get lower.
3 Huge retail companies such as Wal-Mart have tremendous power and they can put pressure on producers to cut their margins. As a result, some producers have had to make cuts. In recent years, Unilever has cut its workforce by 33,000 t0 245,000 and dropped lots of its minor brands as part of its "path to growth" strategy. Cadbury has shut nearly 20 per cent of its 133 factories and cut 10 per cent of its 55,000 global workforce. These cuts help keep costs down, and the price of food stays low.
4 Does cheap food make people unhealthy? Cheap food may encourage people to eat more. Food companies certainly think that giving people more food for their money makes them buy more. Giving people bigger portions is an easy way of making them feel they have got a better deal. That is why portions have got larger and larger. In America, soft drinks came in 80z (225g) cans in the past, then 120z (350g), and now come in 200z (550g) cans.1f a company can sell you an 80z portion for $7, they can sell you a 120z portion for $8. The only extra cost to the company is the food, which probably costs 25 cents.
5 Now companies are under pressure to stop selling bigger portions for less money. But it is hard to change the trend.

The Science of Persuasion

If leadership consists of getting things donethrough others, then persuasion is one of the leader's essential tools. Manyexecutives have assumed that this tool is beyond their grasp, available only tothe charismatic (有魅力的) and the eloquent. Over the pastseveral decades, though, experimental psychologists have learned which methodsreliably lead people to concede, comply, or change. Their research shows thatpersuasion is governed by several principles that can be taught and applied.

The first principle is that people are morelikely to follow someone who is similar to them than someone who is not. Wisemanagers, then, ask peers to help make their cases. Second, people are morewilling to cooperate with those who are not only like them but who like them,as well. So it's worth the time to uncover real similarities and offer genuinepraise.Third, experiments confirm the intuitive truth that people tend to treatyou the way you treat them. It's sound policy to do a favor before seeking one.Fourth, individuals are more likely to keep promises they make voluntarily andclearly. The message for managers here is to get commitments in writing. Fifth, studies show that people really do defer to (服从) experts. So before they attempt to exert influence, executives should takepains to establish their own expertise and not assume that it's self-evident.Finally, people want more of a commodity when it's scarce; it follows, then, that exclusive information is more persuasive than widely available data.
